A better question for me is what WOULDN’T I be? I have so many passions and interests that sometimes I even wonder myself what I would do if I didn’t teach. One thing is for sure: whatever I would be, I would certainly make more money than I do now!

It’s important to say up front that even adults don’t always know what they want to be when they grow up. Adults change jobs all the time because we change as people. Some keep the same profession for 40 years, while others change jobs every four. Everyone chooses their own path in life. Don’t think of your profession as something engraved in stone that can never be changed or broken. I am 28 and have been teaching for more than 8 years, and while I like to think that I would do this forever, sometimes I wonder if I actually will.

When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a electrician because I want to be like my brother-in-law. Unfortunately I didn’t get chance to study physics because that time school is not having science stream. When I was in secondary grade, I realized that I would really love teaching. I also realized that I would really love to do some electronics works and computer repairing work for the rest of my life. I chose the smart route and majored in teaching, but I’ve always kept my love for computer works.

I would love to have my own computer shop and a school of computer where anyone can learn about computers with a little fee. I am a very social person, but I also like time by myself.

See all of these options and possibilities? I think about everything I would do if I didn’t teach and sometimes wonder why I don’t just quit my job and do them. But then I stop and think about my students and my coworkers, and as cheesy and stupid as this may sound, I really can’t leave them. My coworkers in LHAEC are like family to me, and my students feel like my own kids (not all of them, mind you). Even those teachers and friends I met in different pasts of Maldives because of this profession, I can’t forget them, especially friends from Meedhoo trip. One day I will probably leave Hinnavaru and start anew at another school somewhere else in the country. But for now, for better or for worse, this is the profession I chose, and even though it is so extremely difficult, I can’t imagine leaving it.

In case you haven’t noticed out there, yes, it’s nasty inside the school this morning.

Heavy rain has led to minor flooding throughout Hinnavaru in these two days. This morning the students and parent had to take another route to go to the school. But it was worse inside the school. All the ways to enter the classes were totally blocked by puddle on school ground. Grade 1 and 2 parents and students had to pass through the new staff room to enter their classes.

According to the National Weather Service in Male’ the rain fall will be less in coming days.

Teachers need to be inspired and keep their morale high in order to provide the best instruction.

Most of the time, it’s the teachers who motivate students to do their best in the classroom, but there are times when teachers also need to be motivated.

Tips to motivate teachers

Smile frequently and genuinely.

Ask how they are doing, and listen to the answers you get.

Hold meetings only when absolutely necessary.

Create an atmosphere of trust through small gestures, and never make it seem like you’re trying to catch your staff doing something wrong.

Compliment your teachers in writing after a classroom walk-through and in public as often as possible.

ALWAYS have your teacher’s back when a parent makes a complaint. Reprimand the teacher privately if needed, but create a united front to outsiders.

Create opportunities for them to attend voluntary training in areas they find interesting.

Acknowledge that they are doing a good job, and suggest on how they can do even better.

Teaching is the noblest of all profession. Did you know that being a professor in school or college commands respect at par with the judge in the Maldives? The money you will make may not be much, but the respect it commands propels many to seek a career in teaching, not just in Maldives but all over the world. It can be rewarding if only you can put some extra effort and the devotion it deserves. If you are in doubt about what I am saying, look back into the history that mankind has left behind. Do we remember the wealthy men of those years? No, not at all, but the teachers, yes we remember them.

Here below are some good reasons why you should choose a career in teaching or if you are one already then why you should continue with it, and the most important of all is the sense of satisfaction you will have when you will call it off a day. The path to becoming a good teacher is full of struggles, but the day your students make it big in this world, it will give you all the satisfaction and recognition you had wanted. After all satisfaction and accomplishment is what we all aim to achieve in our life. Don’t we?
1. As I said earlier, your students’ successes are what will keep you going as a teacher, but don’t expect everyone to perform their best. Try to understand that students come from different backgrounds and their potentials too are vastly different. So you are more likely see disappointments just as you will see successes. Get resigned to that fact and continue making your contribution to mankind.

2. Teaching unlike goods is never lost; the more you teach the more you gain from experience and new learning. Successful teachers keep learning throughout their lifetime, and they have to anyway. You will need to keep abreast of new developments that take place all over the world. So make it a practice to attend symposiums, seminars and orientation course as often as you can. Remember that to be a knowledgeable teacher you will have to be a good student as well.

3. What can be more invigorating than living the day with young men and women? Living with young people will keep you healthier and fitter throughout your life. Play sport with them in the evening, crack jokes or even join and enjoy parties with them. Good relationship with your students doesn’t mean you knock down the fence between you and the students. Keep your dignity at all cost by keeping a safe distance even as you remain their darling.

4. There cannot be any other profession that gives a sense of absolute power, than being a teacher. You will be the king inside the class room and not even the mightiest can tell how you will go about teaching them. You can mould them as you want and when you want; to the students you are a demigod. They look forward to you to be guided in this world called maze.

5. Teachers are a rare commodity around the world, so job security is inherent to the teaching profession. If you believe in an honest life free from interference from anyone including your boss, then teaching is just the thing for you. But, to realize all that, you have to lead a life of self discipline and selflessness. You will need to be innovating all the while and use some of the best resources. Why not even try a Dish Network connection to get your daily dose of humor for your students? There is plenty of it there.
